Two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese.
But could the answer to our nation's weight problems come in the form of a spray?
In the last two years, more than 150 spray-on foods have hit the market.
From marshmallow to teriyaki and barbeque to banana split, the sprays come in a range of flavors.
The idea is to allow dieters to skip high fat toppings or gravies for low calorie spritzers of the same flavors.
But critics say it could lead to bad food habits.
Andrea Giancoli, a dietician, says, "What is a kid going to do? Go around his entire life, or her entire life, with a bottle of bubble-gum flavored spray and put that on every single vegetable that they consume.â€
David Burke, a restaurant owner, thinks the trend might last.
"A year ago, when we first started, it was very bizarre. People think, you know, everyone is a critic and a skeptic to a certain degree, until you try it," he says.
Only time will tell if these spray-on foods will catch on, but for right now, food companies are working on dozens of more flavors, including "greasy french-fry.â€
