I cook with very little salt if ever. I will check out the sea salt. The problem I face with salt is that is added to every processed thing out there. Since I am not a vegain, plenty of it ends up in my system anyway. Nes, I agree that you get used to no salt in stuff after a while. Spices and herbs go a long way as does lemon, lime, etc.

Hi Guys
this is my first post.
I have found that when I slowly reduce my intake of anything I do not miss it. I used to have two sugars in my coffee, but now that I have none, when a cup with sugar has been stirred and the spoon then put into my cup I can still taste the sugar.
This is the same for salt. However if I have to use salt in meals then I use sea salt. I don't put any other salt on the dinner table and nobody ever asks for some.

I don't cook with salt either. However, I am tracking my sodium intake this week to see what I am doing....What I can't find is how much sodium should I be taking in a day? I found one website that said 1500-2400 mg. But that does not give me quite the picture I am looking for.
I will be seeing an endocrinologist in about 3 weeks and in the meantime, wanted to track some things before I go in.
One of my favorite things to have is marinated okra....2 pieces were 350 mg of sodium! My heart breaks!

Salt intake is tricky, it seems like the max salt numbers are different depending on what source you look at. One problem is the more active you are the more salt you need so it's tough to just give a blanket number. I think too much salt isn't a major worry when you're cutting calories anyway. If you used to eat 3000 cals/day and now you eat 2000 your salt intake is probably lower too. If you increased exercise as part of your diet you need more salt than you did anyway.

Ok, today I tracked everything that I ate and drank.
Here are my numbers for today: Calories= 1255 Fat= 24.1 g Carb= 202.13 g Sugar= 101.88 g Fiber= 18.33 g Cholest= 265.5 mg Sodium= 5928 mg
When I wrote down what I ate, it was that "light" soy and "light" terriyaki sauce that truly did me in today. Now, I am trying to figure out what to substitute for them. Those Tablespoons are not work that much salt to take in.
Also, I am still researching and learning about Cholesterol. My LDL is high so I am trying to get it figured out or at least do more research so when the doctors talk to me about all this stuff, I can better understand and follow.

Yes, I won't be slathering that soy or teriyaki anymore.
Today is a new day. And tomorrow, and the next day...

I have a question... If reducing your salt intake is good for high blood pressure... what about low blood pressure. Is it the opposite? Do I need to UP my salt intake maybe?
At the moment I am limiting myself to 2400mg sodium per day.
Anyway - just wondering if having low blood pressure means I should consider having more salt in my diet.

Recommendations for sodium around the world range from 1000mg of sodium per 1000 calories of food with a max of 3000mg for the day up to a flat 3300mg of sodium maximum for the day. The US RDA Maximum is 2400mg. Extra sodium can raise blood pressure for people with low blood pressure, however more sodium can also lead to heart failure. Drinking more water increases blood volume which can increase blood pressure. There are also medications for raising blood pressure. In the end I think it's best to seek medical attention and get recommendations from a Doctor, as self medicating whether via drugs, herbs, or just simple salt can be dangerous without knowledge of a persons full medical history or ability to track changes in the body without blood work.

I did much better yesterday, by just over 2400 mg. Have to watch those processed foods and all those lovely sauces. Wow, I have definitely had a grand time getting to this weight. It's apparently been quite the party!

Thanks for the info
For now I am hovering around the 2500mg - 3000mg sodium per day.
I am pretty sure that is safe for now.
Thanks again..

I've never calculated how much salt I eat but I'm guessing it's probably high. I survive on spicy food, soups and meat substitutes and those typically have a lot of sodium. When I do add salt to anything it's almost always sea salt, but still.... I need to remember to cut back.

I'm a bit heavy handed with the sea salt. haha I feel like a light sprinkle over things made at home bring out the flavours. I usually don't salt dishes that have high sodium items (meat substitutes when we have them and canned soups), but I couldn't imagine not having it at all. Clovenhoof always yells at me for it. XD But I don't feel like I consume that much sodium. I'll have to take count for a week and see what I average.

I want off this blood pressure medication so learning to watch the salt is something tedious but necessary for me right now.

Your taste buds will adapt to eating healthy. After a while, that bland food will taste surprisingly good.

I am used to not putting it in my food. I can't avoid it completely when using processed/canned food but I have been making some comparisons at the grocery to decide which can is the lesser of 2 evils.
