Question Craving Sweets

Since I have started the atkins diet, my craving for sweets has increase. What can I do to help my cravings for sweets?

One of the things that I do is endulge in healthier sweets, which include high protein/low carb shakes, low calorie/low sugar chocolate fudgesicles (40 calories each), healthy cereal bars made by South Beach, etc...all of which have a sweet flavor without the penalty of high calories and high carbs.

Re: Craving Sweets

There's some great "diet friendly" ice cream out there.

They're always portion controlled (like one bar or one little cup), and they're actually really good and low in calories. I'm afraid I'm not sure about how many carbs they contain though

Re: Craving Sweets

I just found some great sugar free brownies and sugar free chocolate milk mix today at whole foods, and bought sugar free log cabin syrup, and they all taste great!

I know it's expensive, but a lot of those upper end grocery stores have a lot of low sugar or sugar free sweets, and even my Albertson's regular grocery store has a section in the cereal aisle with nothing but sugar free sweets!

Be careful of commercial sugar free brownies and anything that says "sugar free." They're full of fat. Check the ingredients. Another gimmick is to say they're "sugar free," assuming that most people think sugar's just that white stuff in the sugar bowl. But they substitute other forms of sugar: honey, molasses, agave, brown sugar, & dates, which are the most sugar-crammed fruit.

But the sugar free log cabin syrup is terrific. They use Splenda. That's because it's intended to stay liquid. But only real sugar (in whatever form) can make the cookie or sweet stiff at room temperature. Durn!

Hi Cynnie, I get sweets cravings too, and satisfy them with cocoa which is GREAT for your health, has 29 times more antioxidants than broccoli, & is even *required* in the diet book I'm using..."The Cardiologist's Wife's Chocolate too! Diet: No Sugar, No Fat & Luscious." It's on Amazon.
Amazon.com: The Cardiologist's Wife's Chocolate Too! Diet: No Sugar, No Fat & Luscious: Books: Joyce Schneider,Robert G. Schneider
Just read the Amazon page to find out how good this diet is for you. Also this diet is BOTH low carb & low fat...Adkins has too much fat for me.

Anyway, buy just unsweetened, non-alkalinized cocoa & Splenda. Mix Equal amounts first, then add water, a little for swoony fudge sauce, more for a chocolate drink. (Avoid milk for the latter; there's evidence that milk prevents the absorption of antioxidants.)

Fudge Sauce:
Mix together equal amounts of Unsweetened (non-alkalized) Cocoa & Splenda. Add water a bit at a time, stirring, till sauce reaches desired consistency. Microwave if you like, pour on artificially sweetened yogurt and fruit, anything. Each tbsp unsweetened cocoa = 20 calories. Two tablespoons mixed with water make a nice serving: 40 calories. No sugar, no fat --

-- and a mega-dose of antioxidants. One tablespoon has 4,000 antioxidants! Look at the list below:

Top 10 Antioxidant Foods According to USDA Research
(per 100 grams, which equals 7 tbsp)
1. Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 26,000 ORACs*
2. Dark Chocolate 13,120
3. Blueberries 2,400
4. Strawberries 1,540
5. Spinach 1,260
6. Raspberries 1,220
7. Red Grapes 739

*Means Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, a fancy way of measuring how well a certain food will help your body fight diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes & complications of diabetes." The higher the number, the better.

Now check out "Health benefits of cocoa" online:
health benefits of unsweetened cocoa - Google Search

Or "Hollenberg & the Kuna Indians":
Hollenberg - Google Search
Dr. Hollenberg teaches at Harvard Medical. His discovery was annouced 19 months ago, so this health excitement is new, new, new. Many docs are calling it the fountain of youth.

Best of luck and health to you CynniePooh!

Actually I checked the labels and there's almost no fat, so good to go! I'm a label hawk! I don't think it's legal for companies to say sugar free if there's still sugar in the food whether it comes from honey, agave, etc......however they can say "No sugar added."

Hi CynniePooh,

For a quick, super-healthy, win-win fix, scroll down to the fudge sauce recipe here:
Super Healthy No-Guilt Chocolate Truffles

I cannot tell you how much I loathe the Atkins diet. Too...much...fat. Hope I haven't annoyed you by saying that, but there are good reasons. If you like, I'll go into it more...

As for your cravings, unsweetened cocoa is also the top antioxidant. Really. I'll give you more info on that too if you like.

Best of luck on your weight loss journey,

Re: Craving Sweets

Atkins makes a line of candy called, Endulge. Some of them are really good, you just kinda have to try some and see what you like. They also make shakes and protein bars, you might try some of those.

I don't know if you can have it on Atkins but since I started my plan (I HATE the word diet) I have been eating sugar free jello with the light whip cream. Not many calories, and it kills the sweet cravings for me. Hope this helps, and Good Luck!
