Australia's best cricketers, footballers and netballers are backing a new campaign to help reduce obesity rates among the nation's school children.
The 'Move More, Eat Well' campaign will offer classroom and playground activities aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles.
The program's ambassadors include St Kilda's Robert Harvey, Australian cricketers Mike Hussey and Karen Rolton, and netballer Sharelle McMahon.
The program encourages school children to exercise for an hour and eat seven serves of fruit and vegetables every day.
Australian batsman Hussey said even Australia's elite cricketers had changed their diets in recent years.
"We used to pile up on pastas and chips and fried fish and steaks and things like that but now there's a lot of fruit and vegetable available," he said.
"They have done a lot of study into what will help you to perform best, rather than going out after lunch and carrying that big heavy stomach that we used to do." Article

| Re: Sports stars back childhood obesity crackdown in Australia I wish more and more athletes world wide would get involved. So many kids idle these stars and would jump off a bridge if the stars asked them to. Athletes are role models, and obesity is just as much of a problem as drugs and other issues that seem to get too much attention compared to obesity.

| Re: Sports stars back childhood obesity crackdown in Australia I agree. Thinking back to all those commercials with celebrities advertising new face creams that would make you look more beautiful and young, or Coca Cola commercial with Penelope Cruz that just make you want to go and get one! The children see it all and they create their heros based on cartoons, movies, video games, sports, etc. Kids NEED role models and what can be better for them as to see their favorite football player drinking water rather than Gatorade, or eating apple versus ice cream?!
It should definitely be encouraged world wide.

I say good luck, because so many famous pro athletes today would rather spend their time endorsing a product that pays them money.
