Shaq's Big Challenge ABC- childhood obesity show

Shaq's Big Challenge ABC- childhood obesity show produced by the same people that brought you wife swap.

debut TUESDAY, JUNE 26 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET)

From ABC's website:

Shaq and his hand-picked "dream team" of experts embark on a crusade to help transform six obese middle school youngsters from Florida into healthy, fit kids - and along the way, demonstrate how other communities nationwide can help fight childhood obesity. In Shaq's Big Challenge he puts six obese youngsters through the most intense, emotional and rewarding time of their young lives. He is aided by six specialists, including: Shaq's own physician and trainer, Dr. Carlon "Doc" Colker, M.D.; personal trainer Tarik Tyler; nutritionist Joy Bauer; childhood obesity expert Dr. William Muinos, M.D. from Miami Children's Hospital; Food Network celebrity chef Tyler Florence; and Shaq's Louisiana State University coach Dale Brown. Together they go into the kids' homes and, schools, then expand their scope to meet with the local school and government officials to develop and implement a wellness program for the children of the community, and later for the entire state of Florida.

This mission does not end with these six children. The goal is for every child in the local schools to take part in Shaq's plan. His dream team addresses the challenges of providing tasty, kid-friendly nutritious meals on a budget, as well as incorporating more exercise into the kids' days. For instance, physical education is no longer mandatory in many public schools across the U.S., so Shaq and his team will develop revolutionary programs to allow every child to get consistent exercise while at school. Once he has accomplished his mission at this school, Shaq and his team will have laid the groundwork to achieve their ultimate goal: to create a fitness plan that could be accepted across the whole of Florida and serve as a template for the entire country. Shaq's Big Challenge will change the way we approach the health of a nation -- one child, one community, one state at a time, until we truly are a happier, healthier, fitter America.

Executive producers are Rick Ringbakk, Greg Goldman, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Coelen, Christopher Handy, Perry Rogers, Michael Parris and Stephen Lambert. The series is produced by RDF USA. It is based on the hit U.K. series, Unfit Kids.

Good for Shaq. I like seeing famous people get issues like this in the spotlight. People will watch who maybe wouldn't have, just because of him.

Re: Shaq's Big Challenge ABC- childhood obesity show

So episode one was today. Shaq goes and visits all the kids to get to know them and introduce them to the viewers. He also introduces Carlon "Doc" Coker, a physical expert, who will be guiding the kids through all their exercises.

James, Age 11 182lbs. This boy's mother is totally at fault. She buys them donuts, pizza, lets the kids eat "fry burgers," (burgers with fries stacked in between), and the worst was the mom puts TWO WHOLE STICKS OF BUTTER IN EACH BAG OF POPCORN SHE MAKES FOR THE KIDS!!!!! She blames the fact that she's a working single mother for not being able to feed the kids healthy food. What a copout. If it meant enough to her, she'd find a way. James gets picked on by older kids because he's fat, but it's not a big deal to him. He said he doesn't think he's fat, which is shocking to me, considering kids call him fat, and I'm sure he has a mirror.

Chris, age 11, 206lbs. slowest kid on his baseball team which seems to be his biggest concern. His role model, is surprisingly, one of the heaviest baseball players in Major League Baseball, David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox. This family's tradition is noodles and sausage loaded with sauce and salt. Chris also loves Baloney and Hot Dogs, and claims his biggest problem is portion control. His dad claims that their Spanish culture, it's not good to look thin, because it's not a sign of health. Everyone in this family is obese, parents and kids. Chris is very sensitive, and can't ignore the name calling that goes on.

Ariel is 14, 211lbs, and is an emotional eater. This is blamed on a traumatic event that happened a while ago.

Kit is 14, 263lbs, a big outsider who never exercises. Has a tough time fighting the urge to eat with all the food signs everywhere.

Kevin is 13, 260lbs, but seems to be in good spirits, and has a very supportive father, which is very important.

Walter Hollinger age 14, 285lbs, plays 5hrs of video games a day, and owns multiple video game systems! Shaq thinks this guy is going to be the biggest challenge. There's pizza and pizza burrito boxes all throughout the kitchen. He gets called Pizza Face for his acne and chubby by a few students. Two guys at his school are betting when Walter is going to quit Shaq's Big Challenge. Even though he's in the worst shape of the group, amazingly his dad and mom are not really overweight, but it seems they have no control over their son. Walter is in denial that he overeats.

Next came the presidential physical fitness test. I remember doing this as a kid. 3 kids couldn't do situps, 4 kids couldn't do pushups (Kit, Walter, Chris and Ariel). Kevin is the best athlete by far; Kevin did 6 pushups, and ran the fastest lap around the track. He blows the doors off of everyone else. Walter couldn't jog 1/8 mile before having to walk, and had to walk most of the way. Shaq is doing a great job keeping the kids motivated and encouraging them to push each other. They seemed very down at first, but Shaq has their attitudes up as the show went on.

Shaq consults Dr. William Munios, a childhood obesity specialist at Miami's Children's Hospital, who has been treating childhood obesity for 18 years. This doctor is worried about Walter's infantile mindset towards his bodyweight. He's not taking things seriously. The doctor is now testing BMI, and all the kids are off the charts. Walter is already asking about getting surgery to lose the weight. The kids hit the treadmill for a stress test, and Ariel failed the treadmill stress test within 5 minutes....she collapsed. An average kid can do 20-30 minutes. With the use of an MRI, the doctor can tell that the average kid has a 4.4mm layer of fat around them, and all the kids have maxed out the MRI's fat layer reading of 20mm. Walter's fat layer was too high and the machine couldn't even read it. Kit's bodyfat percentage was 50%; she's 150lbs overweight.

What I like is that Shaq and the doctor don't beat around the bush with the parents and kids. They explain the symptoms, including death. A lot of these parents and kids act so shocked when they see these results on paper, it's as if they didn't realize there was a big problem! I like that the doctor insists that diet and training is the only safe way to do this. No diet pills, no liposuction, no obesity surgery.

Next part of the show brings in Joy Bauer of Joy Bauer Nutrition. Joy comes by to each of the kids' houses with a bunch of fast food and junk food as an example to show the kids what they're really eating on a daily basis. Showing them what 5lbs of fat looks like, how much sugar is in the soda they drink each week, etc. She's also counciling the parents to do their job and keep an eye on the kids and only allow them fast food once a week. I say good luck, and blame the parents more than the kids for why the kids are in this bad of shape to begin with. I wish they spent more time schooling the parents on childhood obesity.

Next, all the kids are given exercises to do in a gymnasium setup. They're supposed to train each day during the week, and on the second day, 3 of the kids didn't even show for their workouts! Walter has been there every day so far, which is good because he's needed the most help. Chris tells Shaq he's doing all the things on his workout checklist, but he's lying; he's cheating. In fact, they have video of all the kids doing their workouts and ALL of them are cheating. Chris is doing his treadmill workouts at a measily 1/2 mph, not even doing a full crunch. Chris checks off stuff he's done when he hasn't done it. James does his treadmill at like 1/10 mph.

Now Shaq after seeing how pathetic they were exercising from the hidden camera, things are going to turn into a boot camp. I'm amazed that Shaq wasn't smart enough to keep the kids under supervision. He actually trusted a bunch of 11-14 year olds who never took their obesity seriously, to take these tough exercise routines seriously in a mature fashion. Boy was he wrong. I'm looking forward to the next show where he puts em through the ringer.

Re: Shaq's Big Challenge ABC- childhood obesity show

Shaq's big challenge ABC episode 3.

Sorry I missed last weeks show!

This week Shaq is trying to get schools involved in the childhood obesity fight. He's trying to get teachers involved through a program that Doc and Dale came up with. It invovles getting the kids to exercise 20 minutes a day in the form of a PE program. He thinks he's going to take this program to the government, and then to the President of the United States. He thinks it's a lot easier than it really is to get childhood obesity programs through. He got it approved at one school, it's a start, and he hopes to take it from there.

Kit drops out of the program and Shaq tries to convince her father to let her return.

Now it's Halloween....
Walter was going to give candy out candy to kids, and his mom smartly gave candy for him to give out that he doesn't like, but all he does is sit down and play video games.

James went trick or treating with his dad and is pigging out on Halloween Candy. Not good. He also lied about what he ate.....but now is getting worked out harder because he admitted to eating a few unhealthy things. James is upset he's getting ridden hard for his actions.

They just did a weigh in......Chris is down to 197, James has lost 8lbs, Kevin has lost only 3lbs, Ariel has lost 11lbs, Kit has lost 11lbs, Walter has lost 15lbs.

Shaq announced he's having knee surgery and is going to have to rely more on other people. Doc is heading out to meet Shaq for a meeting. Shaq's new program he tried to implement at a school just got rejected from a school. First it gets approved, then a new superintendent comes in and throws Shaq and his program out. He's pissed.

Shaq is tryingto get a hold of this interim superintendent and he won't return Shaq's calls. He's getting pretty upset.

Shaq is now using incentives to get everyone to lose 20lbs each...and if everyone does, he'll take them all to a Miami Heat game to meet the players.

Walter is excited he can see his toes for the first time. Shaq is talking to James about James' weight loss setbacks. James is getting upset with the trainer Tariq, and Shaq is trying to boost his mental focus.

Interesting how during breaks in between scenes they show images of random people's bellies.

Now Tariq is making everyone flip/move huge tires. The kids are struggling be Tariq is riding them. James is still being the laziest of all.

Shaq and Tariq are going to James' house (in Shaq's Lamborghini ) . James doesn't like Tariq's attitude and says he's really mean. He wants Tariq to be nicer. James feels he's being singled out. Shaq and Tariq have gotten through to James to help him understand why they're being tough on him.

Principal Flynn finally called Shaq to let him konw the program was back on in the school, and Shaq was a very happy man.

Next comes the 2nd Presidential Physical Challenge. Kevin's dad was preaching to Doc that he thinks Kevin could do better if the parents could be there in the gym with them. Doc said "you had thirteen years to supervise your child to get him to exercise, and you didn't" Chris is on a cruise so he's not there. All the kids stalled on the pushups and situps. Not good at all. Kevin 12:55, James 12:54 down from 15:56!, Ariel 14:19, down from 17:35, and I think it was Walter who ran 16:07 was 18:46 the first time!

Next week, James is hounded by the other kids because he's not losing weight, and everyone has to lose 20lbs to go to the Heat game. Shaq sees what kids are eating in schools for the first time and gets them to petition for better food.

Great writeup again! I'm mad I missed Shaq's Big Challenge again! I expected issues like this. If all the kids' weight loss went smooth then no one would watch! TV viewers love adversity and humor!
