Shaq Introduces His Game Plan to Help Defeat Childhood Obesity

Miami Heat Superstar Shaquille O’Neal Teams up with Mighty Milk to Become Official Spokesperson
Shaq is Mighty Milk’s “Mighty Man”

BENICIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Shaquille O’Neal works hard on the basketball court. That’s why he is a three-time NBA Finals MVP, a two-time NBA All-Star MVP and a member of four NBA World Championship teams. Shaquille O’Neal also makes smart choices off the hardwood that have helped in his rise to the top of the game.
These choices include training hard, getting enough rest, eating correctly, which includes getting the right amount of nutrition, something that kids in America don’t get enough of today. That’s why the numbers associated with childhood obesity are staggering. The number of overweight children in the United States has nearly doubled since the late 1970’s.
These statistics concern Shaquille and CytoSport, maker of Mighty Milk Nutritional Drink™. They are addressing them and have partnered to launch Mighty Milk Nutritional Drink, a healthy alternative that is packed with essential vitamins and minerals that can assist in a kid’s healthy lifestyle.
CytoSport and I will get the message out to kids, parents, schools and other guiding forces in kids’ lives and help educate them about living a healthier lifestyle, such as eating well-balanced meals, exercising often, and about nutrition. Together, with a well-balanced diet and regular physical activity, Mighty Milk can help ensure that kids get the nutrition and energy they need,” said Shaquille O’Neal, the Mighty Milk Mighty Man.
Recent studies show that 87 percent of today’s kids have poor eating habits, which leads to childhood obesity; approximately 25 million kids are considered overweight-the most in history. Studies also show that once a kid is overweight he will become an overweight adult. Eighty percent of overweight teens are likely to become overweight adults. Overweight kids face health risks such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, even arthritis.
Times are different. We need Shaq and Mighty Milk.
“When I was a kid, we didn’t have access to so many computer and video games…we were more active (physical activity was everything for me). In addition, we didn’t have jumbo meals, the super-sized sandwiches or the amount of candy and chips that are available today. We need to educate parents and teachers so they make the correct purchasing decisions. It’s very important for the schools to get involved too, so they help kids lead a well-balanced life, which includes eating well-balanced meals,” said Shaquille O’Neal.
Mighty Milk has 14 grams of protein, 9 carbohydrates, 5 grams of fat (and zero trans fat) and only 4 grams of sugar. Mighty Milk Nutritional Drink is the quick, easy, on-the-go smart alternative that’s full of good nutrition for healthy kids—and guilt-free moms.
Additional nutrition highlights include:
  • <LI class=bwlistitemmarginbottom>Vitamin A (20%) <LI class=bwlistitemmarginbottom>Vitamin C (20%) <LI class=bwlistitemmarginbottom>Vitamin D (20%) <LI class=bwlistitemmarginbottom>Vitamin E (20%) <LI class=bwlistitemmarginbottom>340 mg of Potassium
  • Calcium (40%)
Flavors include: Chocolate Shake, Cookies’ n Cream, Go Bananas, Root Beer Float and Chocolate Mint. In addition, Mighty Milk’s research and development team is working on new flavors and brand extensions (look for Mighty bars, Mighty Vitamins and Mighty Puddings) to be unveiled in 2007 and early 2008.
“It’s imperative to educate mothers, teachers and school administrators; they need to know that there is an alternative for their kids. There’s a big problem in this country as a lot of kids skip breakfast and go through their school days hungry. Then, when it’s time to eat they choose a less nutritional snack or beverage,” said Greg Pickett, Founder of CytoSport, Inc., maker of Mighty Milk. “If they choose Mighty Milk in lieu of the less nutritional beverage or snack it will help keep the child on track with his or her nutritional intake.”
Shaq and Mighty Milk have a lot planned in 2007 including an essay contest, a comprehensive advertising and marketing campaign, and much more.
CytoSport Beverage Company, the sister company of CytoSport, Inc., is the manufacturer of ready to drink beverages for active individuals. CytoSport Beverage Company’s brands, Muscle Milk®, Muscle Milk® Light and Cytomax® are used under license from CytoSport, Inc. The company’s newest beverage--Mighty Milk Nutritional Drink for Kids™—will launch on January 1, 2007. For more information on Mighty Milk, please visit www.mightyfoodz.com. Mighty Milk can be found at GNC, Vitamin Shoppe or on the nutritional aisle of your local retailer.

Although he will most like reap great financial benefits from this arrangements, it's nice to see role models getting involved in reducing childhood obesity and the health of our youth.

I honestly do not care if he is getting monetary gains from this, as long as a positive message is being sent in an effort to combat childhood obesity, I am a happy camper.
