Govt to ban fatty foods in school tuckshops
The Western Australian Government will ban fatty foods in school canteens next year in a bid to fight childhood obesity.

Premier Alan Carpenter says new guidelines will ensure that canteens offer sandwiches with lean meats, fish, rice, soup and fresh fruit.

He says there will be no deep fried foods or ice creams and the Education Department will offer training and advice to canteen staff.

"We're confronted with an epidemic - obesity - in young people and not-so-young people and we need to do things about it," he said.

Mr Carpenter says it will also become compulsory for year one to 10 students to do at least two hours of exercise each week during school time.
