Cook book for children

Hey everyone!

Here is the project I's done in one of my nursing classes for the Childhood Obesity Task Force. It's a cook book and nutritional guide for parents and children ages 5-10. The main goal was to design the educational tool for families with kids to help them understand healthy nutrition better and hopefully reduce risk of becomeing overweight.

Please feel free to look it over. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

My kids are 12, 11 and 9, I'll print this out and bring it home and have them read it and see what they think.

Re: Cook book for children

That book is so cute for kids! I must admit I find that boy eating the apple to be adorable! I think your ideas and examples are great, and the book is not too long where a child will lose interest. It is important like you mentioned to keep them involved in the whole process! My guess is they will enjoy shopping less than participating in cooking.

How is nursing going Yuliyasha? I have not heard from you in a while, I miss having you post here!

Re: Cook book for children

Thank you Merle for your warm response. I tried to make book simple for 7-8 year-old reading level, make it more colorful and easy to read. I hope someday to be able to teach group of children and practice cooking those recipes! Do you have kids? I showed my book to the group of patients and their moms at the peiatric clinic and they all wanted me to give them a copy. So hopefully they've been using it
I haven't been here because of school. It is very busy right now. I have two weeks left till graduation! But that's just the beginning. Then, as you might know, all nurses must pass the boards (NCLEX) and find decent job.
I'm glad you remembered!
I'll try to be here more often.
Take care!

I sure do have kids, but they're all grown up now. I even have some grandkids as well but they are not old enough yet to grasp or understand what is in your book. I will have to save it for them when they get older.

Congratulations on graduating dear! Your family must be so proud! I'm sure with the high demand for nurses you shouldn't have any problems finding a good job.

We'd love to have here more often, it is nice having your expert and intelligent opinions around! Hope to see you more once things get less hectic and good luck with the nursing test!

Re: Cook book for children

very well thought out. you said you wanted some feedback so here it goes. i think it might help to talk a little bit about why eating healthy is important and what good things can come of it. maybe even in terms that will relate to kids. for example eating healthy can give you more energy and keep you thin which will help them be better at sports. boys especially will like the idea of being better at sports

the how to read nutritional facts part was a little confusing for me. 40 vs. 100 vs. 400. every kid is different and if i was a kid i would read this to mean that i should eat 100 calories every time because 40 is too little and 400 is too much

i also think in that same section highlighing all the fats as bad may send mix signal because unsaturated fats are not necessarily bad for them

also, sugar should be highlighted yellow as bad i think.

i hope this helps and i think what u do for kids is wonderful!

on the next page your items to put on the grocery list is a little confusing to me too. i understand that you put healthy grains on there and that they should be low in fats and sugar, nevertheless most of the items on that list are usually not made of whole wheat

breadsticks i have never seen whole wheat and same with tortilla chips and i do not think rice cakes are ever made with whole wheat. some cereals are whole wheat but most are not

Re: Cook book for children

Yuliyasha~ Thanks for that! My kids are all under the age that you wrote it for, BUT I am going to use the recipes and make sure that I print it out for future use.

That is a job well done! Thanks again!
