Brand new to the group & I have LOTS of questions

Hello everyone,
I am brand new to the group. I'd almost given up on being accepted since it took so long for my application to be approved. Thank goodness it was!

I'm excited about being here and I have LOTS of questions. I don't even know where to start so I'll start with my most pressing question first and go from there.

Can obesity in teenage girls cause them to have irregular periods? I know being underweight can make this happen but can being overweight?

Re: Brand new to the group & I have LOTS of questions

Welcome Hanna!

A ton of things can cause irregular periods, and they're especially common in teenagers. But yes, obesity can increase estrogen levels so that would mess up your cycle. If it's happening to you you should still probably get it checked out. In my early 20s I had the misfortune to have a never-ending period for like 2 months. I was worried it was from my weight messing up my hormones but it turns out I had a thyroid condition, which explained my hormone issues AND why I was having so much trouble with my weight. The cure for most cycle irregularities is hormone therapy, AKA taking birth control pills. It is awfully convenient to know when you're getting your "special time" even if avoiding pregnancy is not an issue.

Re: Brand new to the group & I have LOTS of questions

Hi Hanna. Welcome. I hope you like it here. I have been here about one week and enjoy it so far.

I am no spring chicken teen but I do believe due to my weight gain over the years, it impacted my cycles. I ended up having surgery though to curb it.

Hi Hanna! Welcome the boards!!! I am so sorry it took so long for your application to get approved. We get an overwhelming number of requests and there are just a few of us running the site. We have to check each request before approval because we get a lot of requests from spammers. We are working on a faster response time!

Irregular periods are common in teens, but I've also heard/read that obesity can cause irregular periods. I would talk to your doctor or gyno.

Hello, and welcome! Thanks for hanging in there! Unlike any other site out there we do a vigorous screening process to keep spammers and hateful people off the site!

Yes, obesity can make periods irregular; we even have a study posted here that briefly discusses that! See the below link. Our studies section has some wonderful resources in there which could answer more of your questions as well!

Obesity preventing your period?
