Albertson's "Healthy Eaters" field trip is aimed at teaching children nutritional information that they can take with them as they age.
"We learned about great foods today," said Neely Riggs, a Peregrine Elementary Student.
Riggs, along with the rest of her Meridian Kindergarten class learned some valuable lessons today.
"Stretching in the morning is good that's how you wake up your body," said Riggs.
"We looked at foods and we did our exercise and learned about teeth," said Connor Hull, a Peregrine Elementary student.
Todays field trip took the children through all the important isles in the grocery store from oral hyegiene to dairy products. And the amount of knowledge these five and six year olds retained is amazing.
"This is the perfect age to start teaching healthy eating and healthy lifestyles," said Missy Nida, Kindergarten Teacher, "Kids at this age can understand it all and they have a new food pyramid that is broken down into color groups so they can definitely understand what group they should eat the most of."
Albertson's initiated the Field Trip Factory program in 2003, and do it in more than 500 stores nationwide including this Meridian Albertson's.
"We bring the kids in here and take them through a field trip and teach them about nutrition and it's a very hands on experience that provides the kids a great way to remember important in long term health," said Michelle Tostado, Albertson's Manager.
Albertson's has come up with fun and interesting ways to teach the children about nutrition.
According to Riggs, her favorite part of the whole day was when she was picked to be a helper one of the many games.
"I got to pick out a food that matched my shirt," said Riggs.
"Students are encouraged to stand in front of the butcher block and flex their muscles and it reminds them that protein is important to build strong muscles," said Tostado.
Along with the field trip the children's teacher says they spent last week learning about healthy lifestyles and that they will continue for the rest of this week.
