Re: Teens weight

my daughter is 12 yrs old and about 5'5 she weighs 142lbs she has always been on the thin side and still is except for her belly has a pooch and well she has a bootie I'm thinking the weight gain is from puberty and her getting her curves

my son is 14 and is about 5'6 and weighs um....160lbs he has always been on the chubby side lately he seems a bit thinner but that could be the mom in me not seeing things the way they really are.

I just want to be sure that my kids are as healthy as they can be. They are eating better now thanks to the changes I've made in the way we cook in our house and the fact that we dont keep the candies cookies or chips in the house anymore and they are limited to 1 2liter of soda a week and when it is gone it is gone and we've actually stopped the koolaide so mostly they just drink water and they dont complain about it. i think the only time they eat unhealthy is when they eat at school. they get pizza and hamburgers at school. i've thought about sending them to school with a lunch from home but since they get free lunches at school i'm thinking they will just dump the lunch i make them and eat at school. I'm trying to get them to go on daily walks with me when the weather permits. That way we all get exercise and we have some bonding time too, but it can be hard to get teens to do anything sometimes. They do get on my stationary bike a couple times a week though. I'm just hoping that I can teach them to be healthier now so they dont have to worry about it when they are older.

You are referring to BMI which is:
BMI equals a person's weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

BTW, don't EVER use BMI as a way to determine health, it's pure BS. I'm a 29.4 which is borderline OBESE...
I don't think anyone would call me overweight or obese right now.

Re: Teens weight

BMI does not take muscle mass into account. Therefore, if you are an incredibly active/muscular individual, your BMI may say you are overweight.

so what if your BMI is low or high??? does that make a diff in your health or your possibility for chronic disease risk?? if it doesn't matter then why is it always thrown around like it does??? just wondering

Re: Teens weight

Is BMI an Accurate Measure of Obesity?

It's important to note that although BMI is accurate most of the time, it may overestimate or underestimate body fat. For example, BMI doesn't distinguish between body fat and muscle mass, which weighs more than fat. Many NFL players have been labeled "obese" because of their high BMI, when they actually have a low percentage of body fat.

The BMI is not always accurate in elderly adults, who have often lost muscle and bone mass. Although their BMI might be within a normal range, they could still be overweight. BMI may also relate differently to various ethnic groups. For example, Asians may be at risk for health problems at a lower BMI than Caucasians.

Because of the possibility for error, BMI should be just one of many gauges used to assess a person's weight status and health. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends that doctors assess whether their patients are overweight based on three factors:
  1. BMI
  2. Waist circumference - a measurement of abdominal fat
  3. Risk factors for diseases associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, high LDL ("bad") cholesterol, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, high blood sugar, and smoking
Many health experts say that body fat percentage is a better indicator of weight status than BMI. But body fat isn't always as easy, or as inexpensive, to measure. Tests such as skin-fold measurements (in which a technician pinches a fold of skin on the patient's body to measure the subcutaneous fat layer just beneath the skin), dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA, which measures bone density), or bioelectrical impedance (which measures the opposition to a flow of electric current through the body -- impedance is low in lean tissue and high in fat tissue) are more precise, but they must be done by a trained medical professional.

Re: Teens weight

.....and next we will learn about the history of BMI----- great pull off the how stuff works website Mike--

i understand and agree with three measures of health (BMI,h-w ratio, fat factors) but in my opinion if you have a BMI that is too high or too low that you are at an increased risk of premature death REGARDLESS what your composition is made of.

one pound of fat is the same as one pound of muscle- they both weigh one pound

NFL players make up a small percentage of the world therefore what they weigh and how thier weight is distributed is irrelevant to the topic here. i understand how muscle skews the BMI scale but regardless if your BMI is too high or low you are at risk!! IMO

Re: Teens weight

Absolutely NOT. BMI is a generalism, by default all generalisms are wrong.
I've stated this before, I'm 230ish and I'm borderline obese on BMI. I can tell you that is straight up WRONG. I am in fantastic shape both strength and cardio wise.
My son is 5'9" 187lbs and around 15% body fat and in unbelievable shape as he wrestles. The kid can run or sprint for miles and can wrestle for minutes at a time w/o getting even slightly winded. However BMI says he's obese.

If you are in good shape with decent muscle mass BMI is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG
