| Teen Diet Leads to Smoking among girls Teen Diet Leads to Smoking among girls
Researchers at the Univ. of Florida in a study of 7795 teens between 7th and 9th grade from 1994 and 1996 found that girls who went on a teen diet were twice as likely to smoke cigarettes. Interestingly enough, there was no correlation between a teen diet amongst boys and smoking. Researchers think that the girls might have been using cigarettes to suppress the appetite in addition to the teen diet they were on. I happen to agree with this because I know many women who have done this in the past.
Another interesting suggestion was that food deprivation increases drug use in animals, and the same could be said here.
However if that's the case, then why was there no change in boys who were on a teen diet? There must be something else to it I think.
