A link has been shown to be present between obesity and migraines
A US study reveals the troubling fact that 36% of children who suffer from migraines are also prone to obesity, something that was already known when discussing adults who suffer from constant headaches.
"The numbers tell us that being overweight may contribute to kids having more headaches, most often migraines," Dr. Andrew D. Hershey, director of the Headache Center and a pediatric neurologist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, said in a prepared statement. "There are likely a number of causes, including poorer general health, body stress, lack of exercise and nutrition. It may not be that being overweight directly causes migraine, but that the reasons for being overweight cause these children to have worsening headaches." (Forbes)
The study focused on 440 children aging in range from 3 to 18 years old, all of which who had visited 1 of 7 pediatric headache centers. The results showed that 91% of the children actually suffered from migraines, but more than 21% of children that were followed in the study were also overweight.
