Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

Some of the car guys on here know me from the other forums and it's always been known I'm a big guy. At 6'4" and usually around 300 lbs I'm pretty heavy. I got down to 250 for the first time in over 15 years in 2004 but Atkins was not a long term solution for me. After hitting 310 a few weeks ago, realizing that 40 was in 18 months and my 20 year high school reunion 3 weeks away I decided to make some changes. Luckily I help coach my kids wrestling team 4 nights a week for 1.5 hours a night. This is an awesome workout if you do it with the kids instead of watching/yelling . We do a ton of cardio, strength training and wrestling during the practices so it's been a huge help. My schedule is hectic and time to workout other than that has been a stretch. I've also started walking on our treadmill every day for 30 minutes at 3.6 MPH as well. I've lost 18 lbs so far and I plan to continue. The biggest change was banning all cookies/sweets from being purchased so that I don't do my regular nightly binge of a 1lb bag of choclate chip cookies...

Next step is ordering some supplements and some creatine so I can start utilizing the weight room at the Firestation here on site at the airport during lunch and moving to 6 small day meals intead of 2 large ones.

End goal? 40 years old, under 10% body fat and 19" biceps!!!
Mike

Here's an old pic of me at around 290 back in 2001

Morning Weigh In: 291.5
Lunch: Mexican Pizza (didn't realize the place had a Taco salad). Did good by passing up on the cookies and goodies at the bakery.
Dinner: Very small portion of Roast with carrots, potatoes, mushrooms and onions.
After Dinner: (2) Suger Free Jello's
Exercise: 30 minutes in the morning on the treadmill, I was late to wrestling practice due to work so I missed the running/cardio fun. I made up by doing 55 minutes on my treadmill - 2.8 miles

I took some deli lunch meat and cheese to snack on at work but never had a chance to touch it. Maybe today.
Today at work we're doing a Jet Pull competition for charity, I tried to get them to let me try it by myself AKA strong man competition but no go...
Goal this week is to hit the 280's, looking good for it so far.
Mike

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

After shower and morning evac and 1.5 mile walk on the treadmill this morning I weighed in at 289.5!

Goal for next Friday is under 285.

On a side note I burned up our old treadmill last night with the 55 minute walk, time to buy a new one. The old one's incline had broken so it was time anyhow.
That's what I get for being ~300 on a 250 max treadmill.

Sounds like you're on the right track so far Mike! Just curious, what other supplements do you plan on purchasing? Definitely stay away from those sweets! Not just candy, but sugared sodas and drinks too!

If you get under 10% body fat with 19" biceps I'll take you to dinner! You can quote me on that and save it!

I wonder if any of that weight loss was water loss from sweat! 2lbs in a day is a lot!

Keep on plugging away!

I have removed all suger from the house other than my Glucosamine drinks 3g of suger, I drink nothing but water, I gave up soda around 18 years ago, I never drink coffee or tea as I can't stand them.
I'm looking at doing some rigorous weight lifting, I'll take a month to get into it and then start seriously blasting.
Besides Creatine I'll also be looking at some amino acids, vitamin complexes and mass amounts of protein.
I'm hoping to transition from 37% fat ~300 to 10% ~240.

You're on for dinner, I'll be doing my best to make it.
teppanyaki and sushi?

You going to SEMA this year BTW? Brett (Metal Man) and I are heading up Thur night to see it Friday. Going to do my favorite prime rib and Jerry's Golden Nugget when we hit town.

Be careful with the super heavy lifting! Getting injured at our age really can deflate some steam when it comes to exercising to lose weight, trust me I know! It looks like you have some very solid goals, and you are already making good headway. No matter what, keep on pushing yourself! You'll love how much more energy you'll get from eating well and exercising more. If you haven't checked it out already there are some great recipes in this forum

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

OK here's some updates:
10/20/2006
Morning weigh in 289.5
Food: 10AM 5 boiled eggs (whites only), 12:30 Ceasars salad with broiled chicken breast, 4:00 1/4 lb turkey breast slices, 9:30 1 broiled chicken breast, 1 chicken thigh and small portion of garlic spaghetti and 2 suger free jellos.
Exercise: 15 minute walk/run/jog
Cons: After doing the jet pull on Thur and then running in the morning my knee is clicking/popping and painfull. No more running outside of the wrestling room for me.
Pros: Drove 4 hours to Hunt Highway & Ellsworth to pick up a new treadmill

10/21/2006
Morning weigh in 288 just out of bed and 287 after workout/evac
Food so far: 5 boiled eggs (whites only)
Workouts so far today - 45 minutes on the new treadmill, knee if fine walking but no go on running. Pretty sweet, when I straighten my legg to lock out it pops then when releasing it pops again. I wish I hadn't broken my knee caps when I was young

I might be able to make 27X by next Friday!!!
I've also been working hard on eating slower to allow my body to tell me when it's full instead of slamming it down and then being over full later.

Mike

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

Be careful about eating carbs like spaghetti so late at night (9:30pm), your body has a tougher time processing carbs into energy after about 7pm or so, and they're more likely to be converted into fat.

You're definitely on the right track though, and eating slower is a great idea. That's one reason the French stay so thin is because they eat so slow.

Keep it up Mike!

End of 10/21/2006
2:30 - small portion of roast, carrots, mushrooms and potatoes and 2 suger free jellows, 7:00 Scallops, shrimp, crab, snow peas and mushrooms

10/22/2006
Morning weigh in 287, 285 after workout and evac
Food: 10AM 2 boiled eggs (whites only), 1:30 1/4 lb turkey breast slices, 1 suger free hello
Exercise: 45 minutes on the treadmill - 3.8 to 4.4 MPH, did light weight lifting, 1 set of 10 reps, bench and curl along with 20 situps and 20 leg raises. Sliding into the next stage of weight lifting and muscle gaining.

rice cakes are binging

That weight keeps flying off, incredible! Are you sure you're not shaving body hair daily in addition to exercise? That weight almost seems to be going off too fast :p

Well, I graduated high school at 165 lbs..
I just went to my 20 year reunion and only 1 person recognized me.

I'm on a mission to get back into awesome shape like I was pre-babies.

How many people were in your graduating class? If it was 2 then I wouldn't worry so much

165 lbs seems a little light for ya! What is your exact weight goal?

There were about 150 people at the party...
I'm looking at final goal of 240 at 10% body fat but I'll probably have to get down to 225 or so and come back up.

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

OK, been kinda busy:
10/23/2006
Weight: 287 out of bed, 286 after workout/evac
Food: 2 boiled eggs (whites only) at 9:30, Club sandwich (about 3" long) and a salad at 11:30, 2 boiled eggs (whites only) at 3:00 and about 5 lbs of sushimi from 4:45 until 6:00
Exercise: Treadmill for 30 minutes in the morning

10/24/2006
Weight: 286 out of bed 285.5 after workout/evac
Food: 1 pack of instant oatmeal at 9:30, 4 slices of salami and a string cheese at 11:30, 4 slices of turkey and a string cheese at 3:30 (too busy for lunch), 1 can of albacore and a can of vegetable soup for diner at 6:00
Exercise: Treadmill for 30 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes eliptical machine during lunch and some light weight/low reps for bench/lat pulls, curls, flys, lat pulls and tricep pull downs just to get my muscles "thinking" about lifting

First day using the exercise equipment at the firestation, I really like the eliptical machine, it's awesome. I was able to maintain a lot higher heart rate than on the treadmill.

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

Eliptical machines are my favorite in the world, by far. Less stress on your joints/bones, and a great workout.

I'm looking at the food you're eating, how many calories a day are you consuming?

Oh yeah, 5lbs of sashimi? WTF! You mean 5oz?

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

I ate about 10 yellowtail, 10 albacore, 10 salmon and probably 2 or 3 specialty rolls at EZ on 32nd St. & Camelback
So yeah, about 5 lbs!!!

I have no idea how many calories, not very good with that but not alot, probably less than 1500 as compared to my old 3K to 4K a day diet.

Re: Trials and tribulations of a middle aged fat man

1500 calories does not seem like enough for someone your size, even while trying to lose weight. Be careful about overdoing the calorie deficit as you don't want to be losing fat AND muscle mass.

I've done something similar! When I was traveling for business in San Diego my hotel had a Sashimi happy hour. 75% off! So I would get 8 orders of sashimi (5 pieces each) :eek4: Boy did I stuff myself.

I'll try and count my calories today and see where I'm at.
