| It's my anniversary Hi Everyone
Well I've make it one year and at 190lbs I feel good. I'm at 1500 to 1750 calories a day with a brisk 5 mile walk 5 days a week along with a 60 minute workout 5 days a week. I'm going to set my new goal at 180lbs by November 1 2008. I realize this is going be a very difficult task if not an unattainable one. I'm pretty close to the wall and I'm in my 50's. I really want to loose the weight to save my joints and ligaments but I'm not sure I can scale the plateau without burnout or blowout. What if I get there, well that would mean a 32% lost in BM? Would 185 LBS be more realistic as a sustainable weight and provide a better quality of life in the long run? If I can not sustain and maintain the weight loss it's a defeat but 5lbs seems to be a cop out
All the best
Jimmy

| Re: It's my anniversary Have you been changing up your workouts, or have you been doing the same routine for the last couple months or longer? If it's the latter, just changing your workout routine and adding new exercises will show significant results. Gyms always have trainers on staff to answer questions, so you can always find one and ask "what would be a good exercise in replace of _____?" <-- insert something you're currently doing and have been doing for too long. This will help prevent a plateau!!

| Re: It's my anniversary Have you tried a carb cycling style diet? Less than 100g of carbs for 3 days, 1 day of carbs = protein and 1 day of carbs = 60% of protein. Protein would be 1.5g per body weight and keep the fat under 20% of total intake. I was at a plateau as well and it's helped me break that barrier.

Jimmy | Why is this unattainable? You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. We'd need to know more about your height to determine whether that weight is good for you (185 vs. 180).

| Re: It's my anniversary Hi Guys
Thanks for the help I can use it. What I want to do is get down to 180 but I do not want to go on a diet. Here is what I do, I eat as much fresh green vegetables and fruit as possible and limit myself to 4ozs of cooked meat a day when possible. The meat is usually grilled or stir fried but it is not set in stone. I also grill veggies and smoke some of the meats I eat, I'm in my element this time of year. I have a ball putting things together outside for the family and I'm trying to find a way to be healthy without dieting rather changing what and the way I eat. The reason is I can not stay on any diet for every but I can change what and how I eat, does this sound reasonable?
I change up my exercise routine twice weekly but I only do circuit core training and power walking because of my age. Everything I do is from a standing position mostly crunches, pops, helicopters and curls. I want to stave off arthritis, maintain flexibility and tone but I want to stay way from bulk. I'm forced to take a long term view that's why I'm so careful about dieting to loose weight. I can loose the weight, I want to keep it off that's what I'm concerned about. I can see my pecks now and I'm 34 - 35 in the waist with a 44 inch chest at 190lbs. The 180 goal is within 5lbs of what I was in college but I was 18 then, that was 35 years ago In short guys I want to be fit and healthy, what's your best advise on how to get there from here?
Jimmy

Jimmy | You don't need to go on a diet, but in order to lose the extra weight and keep it off you may need to make a lifestyle change with your eating habits, similar to what you mentioned, with calories in mind. Diets are meant to be short term in nature, whereas the lifestyle change is meant to be something you keep up for the long haul of course. If you're interested we can show you how many calories you'll want to eat on average in order to achieve your weight loss goals and keep the weight off once you get there.
If you're dead set on eating exactly what you mentioned before, my concern is that there's very little protein in what you're eating...you're losing out on building and/or maintaining muscle.
Also be careful with how much fruit you eat, because fruit is loaded in sugar and too much fruit can have a negative effect.
