| Re: Diary of a fat girl
I read a study from the American Psychiatric Journal that found that 66% of people seeking bariatric surgery have mental disorders.
I remember a neighbour, a mother, in the early 60's that would tie up her daughter to the potty seat. I was a child so I assume it is cause she wasn't potty trained but the girl may have been 5 years old. Mother was obese and daughter grew up to be obese.
An obese mother neighbour had 2 obese boys and one of them especially was quite paranoid, spreading rumours and disruptive in the the neighbouhood. They played with my son. The mother did not treat them well and the also obese father washed his hands about raising his kids.
I am just mentioning this cause it seems to corroborate that study. Then we have the obnoxious character in South Park Erik Cartman is this a reflexion of reality?
Can we lose weight without confronting the psychological twists in our lives and minds?

Broad I think you might fall within the 66% that has a mental disorder. Learn to read at grade 6 level; there is 34% obese that doesn't have any mental issues according to the study. Go back to school for remedial reading. In the meantime save us the pain of answering you.

Wildwoman:
I am overweight 26 BMI but I could easily become obese in 3 months if I don't watch what I do. Do you think that the obese that seek bariatric surgery are a group radically different within the obese population?

The study you refer to, states: Quote: |
Approximately 66% of the participants had a lifetime history of at least one axis I disorder
| Axis 1 disorders include anything from depression to anxiety to ADHD, and phobias....and on the more severe size schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say those who are obese are more likely to suffer from depression than those who are not obese, and that depression comprised the largest amount of Axis I disorders in that 66%. Quote:

Truthseeker,
Are you not familiar with how the forum topics work? Why are you bringing up bariatric surgery in someone's introduction post? She never said she was considering surgery. Also, I don't see what about the initial post suggests any mental illnesses or child abuse!!!!
Just because you know of 2 fat parents who were not nice to their kids, you are claiming that we ALL have problems? I can certainly think of 2 thin people off the top of my head who were bad parents, should I therefore assume that some cartoon character is an accurate depiction of obesity?! And honestly I don't know where you even got the connection there, I have only seen the show a few times and I know Cartman isn't abused and doesn't have an obese parent!
Obesity is often a symptom of depression (when you are despondent you don't tend to exercise, plus when you're sad eating can make you feel better temporarily) so it makes sense that it would affect a considerable percentage of the obese, but I'm with Wildwoman, those who seek bariatric surgery do NOT AT ALL reflect the obese population at large!
People only seek surgery if they have already repeatedly tried and failed to lose weight. Obviously if you try and fail multiple times to do something important to you in life, whatever it is, you are going to have some emotional issues surrounding that, quite possibly to the extent of it becoming a mental illness.
Truthseeker, next time you are going to post something rude and insulting that basically implies a whole group is abusive to their children, I suggest you reconsider.
~Monique

It's unfortunate that you feel insulted about my post. The original post mentioned a mother keeping her daughter on a permanent diet. It just conjures up bad parenting memories I witnessed and we all know how bad parenting can lead to problems with children and adults.
It's also well mentioning that we are not all physical beings but psychological beings too....one can only overlook our inner mental workings at our own peril.
