That is a start, lowering calories eaten. One of the best recommendations I have seen here, which requires commitment, is to first determine how many calories a day your body burns, then figure out how many calories you want to eat a day in order to achieve your target weight loss. For example one pound of fat is about 3500 calories. If you wanted to lose a pound a week you would need to eat 3500 calories less per week than calories you burn each week. That would be similar to averaging eating 500 calories less each day than you consume. This is what Obesity Discussion means when he says calorie deficit (eat less than you use).
