The US Drug Enforcement Administration says 10 puppies were rescued during a raid on a farm in Colombia.
Some of the puppies were labrador retrievers.
A veterinarian had stitched a total of almost 7 pounds of heroin into the abdomens of six pups.
Three later died from infections after the drugs were removed.
Drug traffickers often use people as couriers, getting them to swallow condoms that have been filled with heroin.
They practice by swallowing large grapes.
