I listen mostly to classical music, ripped to Apple-lossless-format (CD quality) on my iPod.
I have 2 sets from Etymotic Research, the ER6 ($99 retail, $89 at jr.com) and the Er4 ($300 retail at etymotic.com, but discounted to $180 at jr.com), both are passive, in-the-ear, noise reduction ear buds.
The er4 is the best I have heard, bar none.
The er6 are a fine set for the more budget minded but who still want very good quality.
