Obesity clinics ‘by end of 2008’
Two new weight-management services will be located at Mercy Hospital, Cork, and University College Hospital, Galway. Funding has been secured for the Cork facility and it is expected that the service will be up and running before the end of 2007, a spokesperson for the HSE told IMN. In relation to the Galway clinic, it is understood that the recruitment process is currently under way and it is anticipated that the facility will be fully staffed and operational by the end of the year. Currently the only obesity treatment service for adults in Ireland is the weight-management clinic in St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinstown. In 2005, over 450 people were on the waiting list for the service, which provides treatment for obese and morbidly obese people. In the Health Estimate for 2006, €3 million revenue funding was provided for the area of obesity and specifically for the implementation of the recommendations of the National Taskforce on Obesity. The most recent figures for Ireland show that 39 per cent of the adult population is overweight, with 18 per cent classified as obese.
