Scotland: Obesity is not a medical problem

Obesity is not a medical problem?
04-May-07

Scottish LMCs voted for obesity to be dropped from the quality framework on the grounds that it is a lifestyle rather than medical issue. Dr Murray MacPherson, from Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said that there was little point in having an obesity register: ‘If there is no evidence for its inclusion, why is it there?’ Dr Maureen Smith, from the same area, said that obesity was not a medical problem: ‘We should stop it from being medicalised.’

I do not agree with this at all; I'm sure this is going to cause a bit of an uproar in Scotland.
