One trick I employ is to eat SLOWLY. This is what the French do, and in my mind is one reason they stay so thin compared to other countries. Eating slow gives your brain time to catch up and understand how full you are, whereas plowing down food does not. Unfortunately, in our culture, we tend to wolf down our food as fast as possible.
