The role of fruit and vegetables in the fight against obesity

[Date: 2007-02-02]
EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel will attend a conference on the role of fruit and vegetables in the fight against obesity taking place in Brussels from 17 to 19 April.

The conference will assemble over 150 international high-level scientists and decision-makers to further elucidate the mechanisms through which fruit and vegetable intake may contribute to obesity prevention, and to decide on the most appropriate and effective strategies to increase fruit and vegetable intake.

The programme will comprise six main sessions:
- nutrition transition and obesity;
- why fruit and vegetables are considered health: an epidemiologic overview;
- dietary fibre and body weight regulation;
- childhood obesity and the early metabolic process leading to atherosclerosis;
- marketing impact on food consumption;
- pesticides residues and perception of fruit and vegetable safety.
