Vandy, middle schools team to fight obesity
In an effort to fight the growing epidemic of childhood obesity, Vanderbilt University health experts and area middle school officials have teamed up to encourage students to be active and make healthy eating choices.
Through the "Live It! Go for the Red, White and Blue" program each child receives a pedometer, with the goal of reaching 10,000 steps each day. Students are also encouraged to eat: whole grain foods; lean meat, chicken or fish; fruits and vegetables; and low fat or fat-free milk, cheese and yogurt.
Participants can track their progress by recording their physical activities and eating habits on an Web site,
www.liveitredwhiteandblue.com.
"Live It! Go for the Red, White and Blue is designed to be introduced in middle school and build on concepts learned beginning in grade five through grade eight," said Dianne Killebrew, the program's coordinator. "These are pivotal ages when lifelong habits are forming and physical activity and proper nutrition are important for a person's long-term, positive growth and wellness."
Battle Ground Academy, Bellevue, Croft, Donelson and Wright middle schools are all participating in the program.
