European Active Surveillance Study enrolled about 59,000 women from seven countries, including the United Kingdom. The study found that there were 90 blood clot cases per every 100,000 combined years of women taking oral contraceptives containing both estrogen and progestin, compared with 44 blood clot cases per every 100,000 years among women not taking oral contraceptives. There were 230 cases per 100,000 years among women taking oral contraceptives who had a body mass index of higher than 30, about five times higher than the rate among women not taking the pills, London's
Daily Mail reports. A body mass index of higher than 30 is defined as obese (Hope, Daily Mail, 1/8).
