Families that exercise together stay fit

Families that exercise together stay fit Tuesday, January 02, 2007AMBER SMITH HEALTH NOTES Families that set fitness goals together are exercising positive values, self-esteem and healthy habits, the YMCA says. "Families grow stronger and healthier by focusing goals on more than just adding minutes of exercise and cutting out unhealthy snacks," Hal Welsh, executive director of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse, says in a news release. "Goals that balance, nurture and strengthen spirit, mind and body are the key to building healthier families for the long term. It's the ultimate exercise." How to set the goals, and achieve them? Ö Schedule a meeting. Pick a time for all family members to create and go over their goals. Ö Make resolutions "well-rounded" so they include physical activity, nutrition, community service, worship, learning and fun. Ö Make resolutions specific, realistic and measurable. Make them inclusive of all family members, considering each person's starting point. Avoid "all or nothing" thinking by measuring increments of your goals on a monthly basis. Ö Accentuate the positive. Add healthy activities, rather than restricting unhealthy ones. Add fresh fruit to the afternoon snack, to help naturally replace the afternoon candy bar. Ö Don't over resolve. Consider what's realistic for your family and what can or cannot be changed overnight. Ö Track progress in a fun, interactive or visual way. Make posters and charts and put them on the refrigerator. Ö Celebrate with healthy rewards. Honor small successes with fun and healthy rewards. Ö Prepare for setbacks and work together to overcome barriers as a team. Setbacks are not failure; they are times to call in the troops for reinforcement. If the flu sidelines your family for a week, schedule a family meeting to get restarted. Couch potatoes on TV "JoJo's Circus," the popular Playhouse Disney series, focuses on fitness in the 6:30 a.m. Monday episode. Jumping Jack heads to Circus Town with plans to teach JoJo's friend, Tater, and the entire Spudinski family of couch potatoes that exercise can be fun. Winter health The American Academy of Pediatrics reminds us that sun protection is important in the winter, too. The sun's rays can still cause sunburn in the winter, especially when they reflect off snow. So cover exposed skin with sunscreen. Obesity and Exercise
