A new study shows a link between obesity and gum disease

We know gum disease has a big impact on health.
It's been linked to cardiovascular disease, early deliveries and even low birth weights.

Now the latest studies suggest how much we weigh could help gum disease take root.

A study from the University of Buffalo says obesity is a big indicator of gum disease.

Scientists say a high body mass index leads to more insulin resistance and inflammation.

That then leads to attachment problems with your gums.

“If we have infection in the mouth, it can affect the entire body and that's something we're becoming more aware and can appreciate more now,” explains Dr. Sara Bender, Periodontist.

The American Academy of Periodontology says more studies are needed.

However, it says the connection between obesity and gum disease shows that having a healthy lifestyle has a huge impact on all parts of the body.
