The genetic predisposition to Diabetes and/or Obesity is caused by mutations of many genes. There's at least 4-5 of them I can remember...It's a very complex relationship which cannot be easily identified, meaning that mutations might not be evident until the person reaches certain age...i.e. majority of people are asymptomatic to diabetes until age 40. Statistically, diabetes mellitus II becomes symptomatic at the geriatric population (>65 y.o.)...as an article said, resistance to insulin increases with age, and compensatory mechanisms cannot control sugar levels by diet alone.
So, genetic and environmental factors affect results at the end. If the person didn't have a healthy lifestyle (well-balances diet and exercise), he or she is definitely more prone to reveal symptoms of diabetes earlier in life. AND alterations in metabolism, such as obesity, act as a trigger to accelerate disruptions in homeostasis.
