Medical care before pregnancy may help diabetics reduce birth complications. Women who have type 1 diabetes more frequently have children with birth defects or that do not live long after birth. The common link depends on how well blood sugar is controlled early in pregnancy. A study of 290 women was performed on women with type 1 diabetes. Those who got pre-pregnancy care only had a 3% stillbirth rate, whereas those who did not had a 10% stillbirth rate.
