Life science industries:
Five Danish biotech companies are in competition for the development of a pill or an injection that can contribute to control the global epidemic of obesity. These are the findings in the a mapping made by the technical journal Ingeniøren. An efficient and secure product against obesity is estimated to be worth billions.
The Danish companies in question are Neurosearch, 7TM Pharma, Zealand Pharma, Rheoscience and the pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk. The five companies are at different stages in terms of development. Most advanced and most targeted are Neurosearch and 7TM Pharma that are testing respectively a pill and an injection on humans. Both products can be on the market in four to five years.
“The real competition is the many international companies researching to find a drug against obesity. But the market is huge so if one of the Danish companies has a good product around year 2010 it will be great,” foretells an expert in field to the Ingeniøren.
The World Health Organisation, WHO estimates that more than 1 billion people are overweight today. If the trend continues it will be 1.5 billion in 2015.
