HEALTH Olympian London, 14 Jul 2006 - 16:11
Former Olympian Roger Black is backing a major new campaign to get young people in south London fitter and healthier this summer.

The Junior Summer Fitness Challenge (JSFC) is being staged at Sutton's Phoenix Centre, in Mollison Drive, Roundshaw, and will run from tomorrow, July 15, until September 3.

Children aged between four and 14-years-old can take part in the free scheme and organisers are hoping to involve more than 200 children.

The scheme has been created over fears about rising obesity levels amongst children and will aim to combat the problem by making physical activity fun.

A reward system including a JSFC medal will be used as an additional incentive alongside a fitness diary. Under the initiative children will be encouraged to take part in at least 30 different activities over the course of the summer.

Sarah Wheatley, physical activity adviser for Sutton and Merton PCT, said: "With child obesity a growing national concern, the Junior Summer Fitness Challenge is a really positive way that we can help promote and support a healthier lifestyle for young people in our area."

Roger Black added: "Exercise should be fun, rewarding and a great way to stay healthy; this event looks like an excellent way of combining all three."

For information about the challenge, or to get involved, call the Phoenix centre on 020 8770 6006.
