Clinton coming for childhood obesity event

CONCORD, N.H. --Former President Bill Clinton is coming to New Hampshire later this month to take part in an event on childhood obesity with the state's first lady, Susan Lynch.
Gov. John Lynch's press secretary, Pam Walsh, said details for the June 27 event have not been completed. She said it probably will be in Manchester and will include children.
Walsh said the event is the result of a conversation Lynch and Sen. Hillary Clinton had a couple months ago about the work their spouses are doing on childhood obesity.
Clinton -- known for his past Big Mac excursions -- worked to get soft drink manufacturers to voluntarily remove sugary sodas from school vending machines.
Under a national agreement, beverage companies agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat and nonfat milk to elementary and middle schools by the 2009-2010 school year. Diet sodas and sports drinks will continue to be sold in high schools.
The agreement was brokered last month by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a collaboration between the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation and the American Heart Association.
It involves industry leaders Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. as well as the American Beverage Association, which together control 87 percent of the public and private school drink market.
Susan Lynch is spokeswoman for Walk New Hampshire, which focuses on getting kids age 6-12 to be active.
Bill Clinton last appeared in New Hampshire last year, signing copies of his memoir, "My Life."
