Tennessee schools would have to provide students 90 minutes of physical activity a week under anti-obesity legislation that passed the state Senate Thursday.
The bill sponsored by Senators Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro and Roy Herron of Dresden was approved 29-to-1. The House passed the measure earlier this month, but lawmakers must concur on changes before Governor Bredesen decides whether it should be signed into law.
Supporters of the legislation expect Bredesen to sign it because it falls in line with his agenda to combat childhood obesity.
The American Heart Association ranks Tennessee third in the nation for childhood obesity and among the top five for Type Two diabetes in children
