'Walking school bus' vs. fuel costs, child obesity

'Walking school bus' vs. fuel costs, child obesity
From the Kansas brief in the "Across the USA" roundup today:

"Shawnee -- The Shawnee City Council hopes the idea of a 'walking school bus,' popular in England and Australia, will help the local school district deal with higher fuel costs. The 'bus' would consist of adults who accompany students walking to school along designated safe routes. Officials want to implement the plan at two elementary schools for the 2007-08 school year."

The Kansas City Star has more on the proposal, including how a similar program is working on a trial basis in Kansas City. "It's really a no-brainer when you see how well this program works," one parent coordinator says, citing almost doubled participation. In Shawnee, the weekly Dispatch paper has a partial list of costs and mentions a local goal of promoting exercise among children. Also in Kansas, the Lawrence Journal-World starts a reader discussion on the possibilities.

You can learn more about how this idea has worked abroad from the BBC and the Australian government. Would a "walking school bus" work in your community?
