Beattie puts $21m toward obesity fight

Looks like the Aussies are on the right track!

Beattie puts $21m toward obesity fight
The Queensland Government will spend nearly $21 million on initiatives to help Queenslanders lose weight.

Politicians and health experts have wound up a two-day meeting at Parliament House where they discussed ways to tackle what they call an "obesity epidemic".

Premier Peter Beattie says more than $8 million will be spent on a new website and advertising campaign about healthy eating and exercise.

Another $10 million will be spent on a community grants program.

"To support building facilities and initiatives to get people active," he said.

"Now obviously, guidelines need to be developed for that.

"We have to work those things through, but examples may be supporting exercise facilities, providing community advice or dedicated community spaces.

"Importantly, communities will apply for grants, for grants they need, not the other way around."
