Writing it down is a great start. The reason I suggest counting calories is because at the end of the day, that's what is going to make you lose the weight, keeping your calories in check. A lot of people don't realize how many calories are in what they're eating, or how many servings they're eating until they start tracking the data.

If not counting works for you, then by all means, do it!
