Hi Brian and welcome to the site!

Atkins was not in the best of shape you are correct, then again neither is Dr. Phil or Richard Simmons at the moment and they have diet plans too . The Atkins diet may not work for everyone, but then again, if one diet did work for everyone, there wouldn't be 100 different types of diets on the market.

I personally have been eating an Atkins style diet for the last 9 years and it has worked great for me, especially in conjunction with weightlifting and cardiovascular exercise due to the reduction of carbs and protein emphasis. I make sure I get some complex carbohydrates into my diet as well, as they are needed for muscle growth and fat burning.
