As for your goal of 5 miles, I'm not sure if that's the most important thing. Consistency is - 2 to 3 miles at least 3 to 4 times a week. That's my routine. I know everybody's different and nothing works the same for everybody but you can't go wrong with that plan, that is as long as you don't develop actual leg problems other than just fatique and soreness. And if you do get that, just skip a day or so to let them recover.
If you're not yet doing any weight lifting strongly consider doing that as well.
