| THE BOOK LIST, Pt 1 THE BOOK LIST So I pretty much read for a living…I love stories, cracking open a fresh new book, and just the pure joy of experiencing life through someone else’s eyes. Hell, I even work at a library. I just finished reading an amazing book called The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland, and thought, you know what the world needs right now? A book list. A book list by Rebecca. So since I’m pretty passionate about ‘em, and I think it’s important, here’s a bunch of books {and book paraphernalia (authors)} in different categories, à mon avis. My favourite writers – well you could prob see most of this on my profile anyway, but here they are: -DOUGLAS COUPLAND --- oh, DC, what to say. I’ve only read 6 of his books, but he’s a genius, that’s all there is to it. There’s such a sense of discovery in opening a book by Douglas Coupland. And another thing, never ask me what any of his books are about. I just can’t do them justice. If I gave you the plot summary (which is what someone usually means when they ask) for Eleanor Rigby, you’d never pick it up. DC books are more experiences to savor than anything else. Favourite book by him: Eleanor Rigby -JENNIFER WEINER --- well-written chick lit? I know, I know, hard to imagine. In fact, it’s kinda unfair to label Jennifer Weiner as a chick lit writer; her books go far deeper than the next shoe sale or one night stand. Granted, a lot of her stories have really similar protagonists, but they’re not formulaic. Whatever, the characters work and seem realistic, plus they’re entertaining and satirical. Favourite book: Good in Bed (the title is more provocative than the book, tho ) -Sophie Kinsella --- a lot of you probably already read or have read her books, the Shopaholic series. To be honest, though, I don’t think the Shopaholic books are her best. Say what you will about Becky getting on your nerves (as she does on mine), Kinsella’s books are soo funny – situationally as well as in terms of her characters. Hers are the only books that continually cause me to laugh out loud. Favourite book: Can You Keep a Secret? (I’ve read it like 3 times and forced it upon countless folk, so look out….on second thought, don’t. You’ll thank me for it later ) -Alice Hoffman --- Her prose is haunting, it’s so good (and no the books aren’t about vampires…at least not the ones I’ve read aren’t.). Just the way they’re written, iunno, I guess it’s the use of imagery or something (I don’t remember all the writing terminology)…whatever it is, you get swept away in her books. Her genre’s magical realism, or so I like to say to sound smart. I’ve read only 4 books by her – 3 of them were just beautiful and one was just okay. Favourite book: The Ice Queen My Favourite Lyricist – so not technically ‘a book/author,’ but I said paraphernalia, right? And songs are a type of writing… -Billy Corgan, mmmm Billy. After much debate (actually there wasn’t much, but as the saying goes and all that) Tibs and I decided that he is probably one of the best of our time. Thank you.
later bits are forthcoming
