It stands for Basal Metabolic Rate.

It is the amount of energy released while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment, while the digestive system is inactive (which would require you not to eat for 12 hrs). The energy expenditure in this state is enough only for the function of:
  • vital organs such as the heart, lungs, brain
  • the nervous system
  • liver
  • kidneys
  • sex organs
  • muscles
  • skin
BMR lowers with age and with the decrease of your lean body mass. If you up your cardiovascular exercise and muscle mass, you can then increase BMR.

We use a basic calculation to figure out what BMR. We then use a multiplier that corresponds to your activity level, and when we multiply that "multiplier" times BMR, that tells us on average how many calories a day you would have to consume to maintain your current weight. Not gain weight, not lose weight but to maintain.

Once we figure that calorie amount that would keep you at maintenance, we then figure out how many calories a day we want to keep you under that "maintenance number" for you to achieve your weight loss goals.

Hope this makes sense.
