This study covers surgeries performed no later than 2002. There has been some improvement in mortality rates for Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare changed its guidelines in 2006: To be covered, surgery must now be done in a certified Center of Excellence. Also, the more experienced your surgeon, the better your chances of survival. Never be afraid to ask your surgeon--or any doctor--how experienced he is.
