Mutton Chops blamed for New Zealand Obesity?

The meat industry has challenged a perception that it's off-loading cheaper and fattier cuts of meat into the Pacific region, where they're contributing to the health problems of consumers.
Parliament's health select committee is the latest to raise the issue in an inquiry into the rising levels of obesity and type-two diabetes.
The committee says a high prevalence of obesity among Pacific peoples needs to be addressed specifically.
It recommended that the Government, the Meat Industry and Pacific nations work together to phase out the export of fatty meats such as mutton flaps to those countries.
But the Beef and Lamb Marketing Bureau's nutrition manager, Fiona Carruthers, says the trade in that product is small and it can't be blamed for an obesity epidemic. Only 1% of exports go to the islands - and 70% to China.
She also points out that the meat industry has been working with the Government for several years on a nutrition education programme in the Pacific region to make healthier meals.
