It is absolutely worth the money. The problem is most people cannot afford them long term or even at all. If you cannot afford the personal trainer long term, the key coming out of this experience is to set yourself up so that eventually you can continue to exercise and eat healthy on your own. You may want to consider taking notes at the gym (writing down the lifts you do, how many sets, how many repetitions, and the weight you use).

I used to train friends for free. I myself was a powerlifter and athlete in high school and college.
