With obesity becoming a larger health issue, many consumers are looking for a way that a food product not only tastes good but can provide weight management benefits. Clarinol[TM] CLA from Lipid Nutrition is the first "Self Affirmed GRAS" health ingredient targeted at the weight management concerns of consumers.
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) refers to a mixture of different isomers. Two major CLA isomers c-9, t-11 and t-10, c-12 are present naturally in the diet and have beneficial effects on health, specifically to improve body composition. Clarinol[TM] CLA, from Lipid Nutrition, has the highest concentration of these active CLA isomers. The health benefits of Clarinol[TM] CLA on body composition include 1. Reduce the amount of body fat and 2. Increase lean muscle.
Many human studies have now investigated the effect of CLA on body composition. A review of these studies has been reported by Gaullier et al., 2002. The doses of CLA (50:50 mixture of c9, t11 and t10, c12 CLA isomers) ranged from 3-7g CLA/day and the treatment periods ranged from 4 weeks to 1 year. In these studies and those since fat losses of up to 9% have been reported including increases in lean mass. Furthermore a recent study Whigham et al., 2004 has now demonstrated that Clarinol[TM]CLA is safe at levels of 6g/d for up to one year in obese healthy subjects, furthermore this study demonstrated that Clarinol[TM]CLA reduced the adverse effects due to dieting.
Clarinol [TM} CLA is perfectly suited for dairy applications such as yogurts, milk, nutritional bars and meal replacement beverages. Clarinol[TM]CLA is utilized by food processors in a clear, golden oil or a powder form, both in a triglyceride form which is specifically developed to function in taste-sensitive foods. In addition, not only is Clarinol[TM]'Self-Affirmed' GRAS, Lipid Nutrition is proceeding with the intention of gaining full notification to the FDA with the aim of achieving FDA approved GRAS status for Clarinol[TM]CLA. In addition, Clarinol[TM] CLA allows the food processor to incorporate a healthy fat and has been excluded from the definition of trans fatty acids by the U.S. FDA (68 FR 4146141462, July 11,2003).
