Executives give weight to fitness

Executives give weight to fitness

Most executives say physical fitness is critical to career success and employers should be involved in promoting it, according to a survey of highly paid executives conducted by executive search firm TheLadders.com.

The majority of survey respondents--75 percent--say good physical fitness is "critical for career success at the executive level." Obesity is viewed as a problem, with 75 percent of respondents saying that being overweight is "a serious career impediment." Only 22 percent said weight had no bearing on career success.

In addition, 73 percent said employers should promote physical fitness in the workplace by providing on-site health clubs or subsidized gym memberships; 12 percent recommended cash incentives. Only 9 percent of surveyed executives said companies should not be involved in promoting physical fitness.

Clearly in the minority was another small group--just 3 percent--which held that a few extra pounds are a "symbol of maturity and career success."
