Childhood Obesity in Bulgaria

Sofia. 24% of the 7- to 10-year-olds suffer from obesity, national expert on healthy eating Prof. Stefka Petrova told FOCUS News Agency in an interview. ‘Obese teenagers are 17.2%, after the teenage overweight reaches 20%, and obesity up to 5%’, she explained. 'At school most children eat at buffets. Many mothers try to give them food, but they prefer to buy from buffets. If 90% of the children buy coca-cola and chips from the buffets, the one carrying a tomato and cheese will also prefer chips’, Mrs. Petrova noted.
‘Overweight and obesity are major problems throughout Europe and many countries use EU programs to give fruit and vegetables for free. In Europe children drink much more milk, they consume much more calcium, whereas in Bulgaria that has become a problem in the past 15-20 years’, she also said.
